They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Though the images mirror a taste of the experience, they are but a glimpse of the potent consciousness of each spaces' existence. Each image serving as a relic, is remarkably beautiful extracting just a fragmentof it's fragrance of a glorious meal you have yet to taste and bask in its sheer glittering magnificence. Yayoi Kusama's spaces are organic gems filled with vibrancy, as potent colors and dancing poke-a-dot patterns, and flicking lights vibrate in space. Each room breathes as you walk into an intimate yet limitless womb. As if seeing a kite flying across a grand field, or a pod of dolphins dancing through the ocean, snow falling from the sky, or tasting cool water after traveling a hot desert for several days soothing your throat and revitalizing your cells, Kusama's creations invoke feelings of curiosity and wonder, like that of an innocent child seeing the world for the first time. Bridging the concept of something so small into something so grand by using many of one, viewers are able to retreat to a realm of bliss, solitude, and excitement. If you could see scents, that is what Yayoi Kusama's spaces allowed me to experience. The smell of something is commonly known to be a trigger that becomes a stimulus projecting a hint of familiarity or pleasure, or alarm. Some scents signify a memory, brings calmness, or familiarity. Kusama's wondrous installations create a sanctuary where the viewer can experience that.
Visually her rooms signified a different scent, as each one has a different color, a variation of light and ambience. Her red and white room, reminded me of something playful, innocent, yet slightly mischievous-like peppermint candy. In a predominately a white room, spots of red, gave the room a sense of spice. A sense of being completely enveloped in a world that swings in like a wave. Making you feel like a child, immersed in a space that transcends space, and truly becomes infinite, and boundless, propelling you in a sacred, personal space that becomes totally free. There is curiosity in its abundance.
Each space becomes a magnet, with its own rhythm and personality as the lights shift from one dominate color to the next. You're very being is jolted feeling at one with the space, like its heartbeat. The space becomes active because you are there to respond and react to its rhythmic color pulses and slight fluctuations of light. I'd strongly recommend visiting her hidden treasures, her visions of another world, and witnessing it for yourself. It will be an experience that is truly timeless and memorable.
